Girmit recipe is a spicy and tangy evening tea-time snack and very popular street food from North Karnataka prepared from crispy puffed rice/murmura. This recipe is popular in the Hubli-Dharwad region of Karnataka and goes very well with Mirchi/Menasinakai bajji.

Gojju or girmit masala is prepared using garlic, onion, green chilli, tamarind extract, jaggery, and spices. This gojju when mixed with crispy puffed rice(mandakki) along with chopped onion, tomatoes, and garnished with thin sev and coriander leaves tastes heavenly.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Tbsp Tamarind
  • 1/2 Cup Roasted Chana Dal
  • 1 Tsp Oil
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Cumin Seeds[Jeera]
  • 2 Tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 Tbsp Chopped Garlic
  • 3 Chopped Green Chillies
  • 6-8 Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Cup + 3 Tbsp Chopped Onion
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Cups Puffed Rice
  • 3 Tbsp Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 Tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Sev
  • 1 Tbsp Chopped Coriander Leaves

Instructions
 

  • Take 2 Tbsp of tamarind in a bowl, and add warm water.
  • Squeeze well and soak for 10 minutes. Later, sieve and extract the tamarind pulp.
  • Blend roasted chana dal to a fine powder and set aside.
  • In a hot pan, add oil, and shallow fry green chillies.
  • Sprinkle some salt, mix well, and set aside.
  • Set the same pan on medium-high heat, add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds (Jeera), and peanuts. Fry the peanuts till they change color and are evenly roasted.
  • Then, add chopped garlic and green chillies, and saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Garlic turns aromatic.
  • Add a few curry leaves, and saute for another minute. Then, add the chopped onions, and saute till they turn translucent.
  • Next, add salt and turmeric powder, and saute for 5 minutes till all the flavors are absorbed.
  • Then, add the extracted tamarind pulp, and saute for another 3-4 minutes. The mixture thickens, and the girmit masala is ready!
  • Take a large bowl, and add puffed rice, roasted chana dal powder, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, salt, red chilli powder, and girmit masala. Give a good mix.
  • Garnish with sev, coriander, and fried chillies. Enjoy!
